WHAT ARE WEDDING ACCESSORIES?

Wedding ceremonies, in some form or another, have been performed in all cultures for thousands of years. Over time, favorite traditions have been passed on from generation to generation. To preserve the traditions, certain accessories were included as part of the tradition, hence “wedding accessories”. So, for example almost all weddings include the exchanging of rings. Another wonderful tradition is the toast to the bride and groom. Although today we drink the toast at weddings from individual glasses or toasting flutes, originally the custom was to pass round a single "loving cup" from which all guests drank. The loving cup has its origins in the Church in mediaeval Britain where at Eucharist the wine was passed around with a piece of toast floating on top. Hence the term “toast” that we use today.

The tradition of having a guest book for the guests to sign arose originally as a way of recording the presence of those who witnessed the wedding. However it later became a way of recording not just the signatures but also the good wishes and thoughts of family and friends so that the guest book would become a treasured keepsake. Today, many couples also use a guest book picture frame as a modern alternative to the traditional guest book.

In addition to preserving past traditions, wedding accesories can also represent new traditions. For example, the bridal garter was invented by Hortense B. Hewitt only in the 1940’s and was known as the “glamour garter”. It was used for Queen Elizabeth II’s wedding and quickly became a favorite part of bridal traditions. The Unity Candle and Sand Ceremony have been very popular in the last few decades as a way of symbolizing “two becoming one”.
